We had a good experience with Dr. Horlick as a knowledgeable pediatrician who was kind, patient, professional, and willing to spend sufficient time with each of my children. However, my issues with them include: - Billing me for both a well-child and sick-child visit because my son happened to have a fever during his well-child visit that was scheduled 2 months in advance without telling me it would be double-billed - The office manager not calling me to address my concerns even after I left 2 messages (I finally talked to her a month after my initial message, but only because of a 3rd phone call) Details on the billing: when I took my son in for his 2 year well child visit, he got a fever the night before. Fevers for my kids usually break within 24 hours, and I don't take them to the doctor unless it's a dangerous level and not going down (not the case with this fever). I took him for the well visit anyway since cancelling appointments within 24 hours incurs a fee, and I figured they could still do his weight, height, general eval just fine. They did the normal evaluation, with the only difference being that they asked if I wanted Tylenol for my son (which I declined) and they did not give him the scheduled immunization since he had a fever. They did not tell me the visit would be billed as both a well-child and sick visit, despite the fact that I did not go into the office for a sick visit or have anything different happen (except less work for them- no immunization). When I called the billing office to ask about the charge, she said it was good coding practice to bill the fever, and she couldn't change the charge. I understand needing to record a fever on his chart; I do not understand billing me for it since it was unrelated to my visit. She said could do nothing, but she could have the office manager call me, but the manager never called. When I did get a hold of her a month later, she said they have to put it in the chart (which I get), and they have to send the code to my insurance and cannot reduce the fee that was passed to me (which I don't get). If their system requires all info in the chart to be sent to insurance, that, to me, is a critical flaw in their system. I also consider this practice of billing me for a fever to be unethical, since it's a lose-lose for me: I cancel last minute & get charged a fee and have to reschedule for another 1-2 months later or take my child in for his normal visit and get charged an extra fee because he happened to get a fever, something over which I have no control. A well-child visit should ascertain the general well-being of my child and then billed as such (one visit, about their well-being, not two visits). This is especially frustrating given that the doctor provides good services overall, but apparently allows double-billing for those services.
