I have been a patient of Dr Shucker for almost two years now and go to his office to get my PT-INR blood tests because I am on Warfarin, a common blood thinner. I take it because I have a condition called chronic A-Fib which means my electrical system is out of rythym on a constant basis. Without the Warfarin, the blood could get too thin and cause internal bleeding or too thick and cause a clot and another stroke. Dr Shucker likes his Warfarin patients to come in and be tested every 4 to 6 weeks which I am pretty faithful about because I understand the importance of keeping the blood at the right consistancy. When I am seeing another Dr., like my cardiologist, I have him include the PT-INR test when he wants to run a blood panel. The Cardiologist then sends the results to Dr. Shucker so I don't have to repeat the test again at his office. This happened in June and then again in July prior to having a out patient biopsy done. Last week, when I saw I was running low on the Warfarin, I asked the pharmarcy to call the Dr's office because I was out of refills. When I went to pick them up a few days later, the pharmacy said the Dr.'s office had not called but they would try them the next day. Since I was completely out, the pharmacy loaned me 3 tablets to carry me over until the Dr. called. I went back three days later to pick up the pills and the Dr. still had not called in the prescription. I had to go without my medicine that night and called the Dr's office as soon as I got up. I was transferred to the nurses station and when I told the nurse my problem she spoke to Dr. Shucker, who told her to give me this message. " If she wants to have them done at a specialists office, then she should have them write her prescriptions". I was dumbfounded and explained the situation to the nurse. She said she would talk to him and call me back or call in the prescription. About four hours later, since I hadn't heard from her, I went to pick up the prescription. Again, it is not there and I am told the Dr. denied the request for a refill. Even more dumbfounded, I drive to the Dr.s office and explain the situation to the front desk person, trying to make it clear that it was not in anyone's best interest for me to have another stroke. She went and spoke to Dr Shucker who told her to tell me this. " This is not a negotiation process. Before I can get a prescription I have to be seen by a Dr. (and none had an opening) and get another blood test" I started to walk out and the front desk person went back, talked to someone, told me to sign in for a blood test and that my prescription would be called in immediately. I don't know if she just got permission from another Dr. or what but I will always be grateful to her for her common sense and caring for my welfare. Needless to say, I will never see Dr Shucker again, and yes, I will have one of my other Dr's take over the maintenance of the Coumadin. I just hope Dr. Shucker doesn't kill someone before he realizes it is time to call it quits. All he had to do was have someone give me a message 8 days sooner when I first called in for a refill. Instead he chose to create a crisis situation.
